Shipping Drums - Best Practices

I am seeking the best way to package drums for shipping.
Nested or boxed individually?
How to prevent shipping damage ie bubble wrap?
Best carrier?
Insurance?
How do the manufacturers do it?
Other tips from the experienced?

Your input will be appreciated!

Hi Jeffrey,

Here is a link to a site that has detailed instructions (with pictures) on how to pack drums for shipping. Check it out...I did and would use these instructions myself!

Just to add to my first posting, I use FEDEX to ship my packages rather than UPS. Why? Because FEDEX delivers on Saturday, but UPS does not. And their rates are competitive.

You should insure your packages for the full value of the contents and you can do this when you create a shipping label on FEDEX.com

Good luck!!!

FedEx and UPS rates are somewhat competitive for regular consumer accounts. BUT UPS is much cheaper if you have a business account. The discounts are substantial. You also get the number of a personal account rep who will answer or get back to you very quickly in case of any questions or problems. The other think I like about UPS is that the drivers are UPS employees while the FEDEX drivers are contract workers and I've had some problems with them. You do not have to have a "business" to get a UPS account. If you have a personal account already, you can switch it to a business account with just a couple of minor hoops to jump through. I don't have all the details at hand right now because I set up my UPS and FedEx and USPS accounts years and years ago, but I have been preparing a shipping "how to" tutorial/guide for the DrumSellers site. Stay tuned.

My comments were two years old George. Since then, UPS now delivers on Saturday and also prefer UPS over FedEx.

Thanks. Makes me realize how old this site is, when posts become obsolete! :-)
